Kursk State Medical University (KSMU) occupies a prestigious level in teaching General Medical, Dentistry and Pharmacy in English medium and in preparing international students. This occupancy shown as being the oldest medical university teaching in English medium in Russia and holding the highest number of international students from different nationality as in it spheres.

Form and the contents of the educational process have changed, thus KSMU organized an up-to-date method such as instruction and knowledge assessment are being improved; multimedia lectures, the Centre for practical training, the Centre of quality management to name a few. The training is based on the application of the research results and innovative technologies, initiated by the Department for administration of innovative activity of the university. Principally new information and teaching environment promotes achievement of educational goals and improving the training quality of graduates.

Over 9000 students study at the university faculties, while the number of applications exceeds the number of admitted by 2-4 times on average.

Programs

The program is designed to train qualified physicians oriented to the practice of medicine. Standardized patients are used to evaluate medical students and resident’s ability to take patient histories, communicate with patients, and determine diagnosis and treatment. The curriculum offers a six-year program leading to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) / Physician in General Medicine degree.

The first four semesters of the General Medicine study program mainly cover theoretical subjects (Anatomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Histology, Physiology). Preclinical subjects (Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology) are taught in semesters 5-7. Clinical subjects are introduced in the following semesters (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neurology) together with subjects associated with public health care (Social Medicine, Medical Law).

The whole sixth year is devoted to bedside training in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics. The program concludes in the 11th and 12th semesters with final state examinations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Preventive Medicine.

Degree and accreditation

KSMU Graduates are awarded the degree of Physician in General Medicine (Doctor of General Medicine) abbreviated as P.G.M., equivalent to M.D.

KSMU Graduates are practicing Medicine worldwide in their home countries as well in more than 80 countries around the world.

Dentistry/ STOMATOLOGY

The faculty offers a five-year program of Stomatology. The teaching-learning process is meant to emphasize the development of practical competence. Careful attention is given to the development of the students personality and work habits, stressing on personal skill that are key factors for successful careers.

Curriculum

Students are taught general subjects (chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, anatomy, physiology etc.) during the first and second academic years. Later, more attention is given to newly emerging fields in the study of pharmacy: molecular biology, biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals and bio pharmaceutics. The clinical aspects of modern pharmacy are given a stronger emphasis each year. The study program includes 6 months of practical training at both public and hospital pharmacies.

Study Program

The study of Dentistry is divided into theoretical subjects (Anatomy, Physiology, Histology and Embryology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics), and preclinical and clinical subjects (Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathological Physiology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry).

The main emphasis is on specialized subjects such as Preventive Dentistry and Cardiology, Preclinical Dentistry, Prosthetic Technology, Dental Radiology, Orthodontics, Endodontic, Periodontics, Preservative Dentistry and Oral Surgery.

A crucial part of the program is devoted to practical training. The study plan also includes courses on management, ethics, legislation and social aspects of dentistry. The Dentistry study program is concluded with final state examinations in Preservative Dentistry, Orthodontics and Prosthetics, and Oral Surgery.

Degree and accreditation

KSMU Graduates are awarded the degree of Stomatology Physician in General Practice (Dentistry Physician in General Practice).

The Pharmacy Faculty was established in 1966. The faculty prepares the students for career in pharmacy with a thorough understanding of drugs and diseases. The curriculum promotes interaction between pharmacists and other health professionals. The pharmacy curriculum offers a professional five-year program leading to a Master of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) degree.

Teaching Method

Pharmacy is taught in semesters, each of them ending in examinations or project presentations. Studies consist of lectures (30 per cent of the curriculum) and seminars/practical sessions, which are the main teaching methods and make up to 70 per cent of the entire curriculum.

Each course includes lectures, seminars, laboratory work, small group work, practice based activities and assignments. Using the body systems model as an integrated context for teaching, the curriculum is designed to break down barriers between disciplines, helping students to learn more effectively. Teaching is integrated, facilitating students’ exposure to basic and applied science and professional practice in the context of patient care. This will be supported by an increasing focus on practice-related learning, as evidenced by placements and in-house simulation-based learning, as well as additional practice experience provided in-house.

KSMU Graduates are awarded the degree of Pharmacist.

Courses for International Students

KSMU was the first university in Russia to offer full medical degree training in English Medium. Under the English medium KSMU has the right to train specialists on the spheres of Pre-University (Pre-medical) course, Degree in Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy (M.D/undergraduate) and Post-Graduate education.

Student of Ordinary Level (or any equivalent).

KSMU provides the opportunity forthe students with O-Level qualifications or A-Level with low marks to proceed towards the Undergraduate program by enrolling onto the Pre-University (pre-medical) course joined with UK awarding Body in PRE-U Foundation Studies. The duration of this course 10 to 12 months and will prepare you for further studies at KSMU.

Student of Advance Level (or any equivalents)

Applicants with A-Level education certificate may proceed to degree (undergraduate program) Medicine, Pharmacy or Stomatology (Dentistry) in English Medium.
